Why strong franchise brands still miss local AI answers
AI assistants judge a franchise one address at a time, so national brand strength does not carry down to the unit. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index asked each engine to recommend businesses of a given type in each market, across about 350,000 locations of 2,751 multi-location brands. ChatGPT named 1.2% of those locations, Perplexity 7.4% and Gemini 11%. In Google's local 3-pack, the block of three businesses shown next to the map, the same brands appeared 35.9% of the time.
Data accuracy is a likely part of that gap. In the same index, business profile details were about 68% accurate on ChatGPT and Perplexity and 100% accurate on Gemini, which reads Google Maps directly.
The audience has already moved. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found the share of consumers who used AI to find a local business rose from 6% to 45% in a year. For a franchisor this turns a reporting gap into a revenue question: for "best [category] near me" in each market, how many of your units get named, and by which engine?
Six cleaning franchises in 10 US cities, September 2026
On 14 and 15 September 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Perplexity "Can you recommend house cleaning services in [city]?" in 10 US metros, three times per engine per city, and compared the answers with the Google Maps top three. Molly Maid was named in 20 of 30 Perplexity answers and 10 of 30 ChatGPT answers. Two Maids held a Maps top-three spot in Phoenix, Charlotte and Tampa, yet neither engine named it there in 18 answers.
| Brand | Maps top 3, cities of 10 | ChatGPT, answers of 30 | Perplexity, answers of 30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Molly Maid | 5 | 10 | 20 |
| The Maids | 1 | 8 | 9 |
| Merry Maids | 2 | 4 | 7 |
| MaidPro | 1 | 7 | 5 |
| Two Maids | 3 | 0 | 1 |
| Maid Right | 0 | 2 | 1 |
Cities: Austin, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Denver, Charlotte, Tampa, Nashville, Columbus, San Diego. ChatGPT in a temporary chat without personalization, Perplexity on its Best model, Maps results via API as a proxy for the local 3-pack. Gemini's web app returned no answers and is not included. Who controls what between corporate, franchisees and Citemill
Most franchise SEO problems are ownership problems. Corporate controls the domain, page templates and schema, while franchisees control the details assistants quote, such as hours, photos, reviews and often the Google Business Profile login. Citemill works on both sides of that line, and the split is agreed in writing before anything ships.
The tension shows up in survey data. In Uberall's Franchise Gap Report, based on a March 2026 survey of 352 US franchise brands and franchisees, only 25% of brands and 20% of franchisees run a shared-responsibility model, and 51% of both groups name uncertainty over what is working as their top obstacle.
| Asset | Corporate | The location | What Citemill does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand domain and location pages | Owns templates and publishing | Supplies local facts | Writes the page spec and per-location fields, then publishes through your CMS or hands the spec to your developers |
| Google Business Profile | Sets ownership, categories and name format | Updates hours, photos and replies | Documents the access model and checks for drift every month |
| Listings feed | Keeps the source of truth | Reports changes | Fixes the source, then compares it with what each engine shows |
| Reviews | Sets response standards | Asks for and answers reviews | Reports rating and review velocity per unit; runs the review pipeline on Complete |
| Measurement | Wants the network view | Wants proof the fees did something | Reports both from one fixed query set |
What the franchise SEO program includes
Every program covers listings governance, location pages, schema, crawler access and per-location measurement. Essential tracks four engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. Complete adds Claude and Copilot, plus neighborhood content, local media placements, a review pipeline and an experiment log. Neither program replaces a listings platform such as Yext or SOCi; both work from its output.

Location data and Google Business Profile ownership
We start from one source of truth per address and reconcile what each engine currently says against it, fixing errors upstream rather than one listing at a time. For profiles, two ownership models hold up: corporate as primary owner with franchisee manager access, or the reverse. The first protects the brand when a unit changes hands, so we usually recommend it and write the removal step for the day a franchise agreement ends.
Location pages that could only describe one address
A location page earns a citation when it holds facts no other page has: staff, parking, cross streets, the services this unit actually offers and reviews from this address. Our test is to delete the city name and see whether anyone could still tell which page they are on.
Google's spam policies, last updated 28 August 2026, describe doorway abuse as pages "created to rank for specific, similar search queries" and explicitly cover attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Search. Swapped-city templates now carry that risk in AI Overviews as well as in blue links.
Schema, crawler access and local consensus
LocalBusiness markup ties each location to the brand entity, and a crawler audit confirms that OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot are not blocked by a CDN rule or a bot filter someone installed years ago. Outside your site, assistants read directories, local media and reviews, so Complete adds city-level placements and a review request pipeline. Home service franchises feel this most.
Answer share and the 3-pack, measured per location
Answer share is the share of your locations that an engine names for a fixed, pre-agreed set of local queries. Queries, cities, engines and the rule for what counts as "named" are fixed in writing before the baseline, so the number cannot move because someone quietly changed the question.
You see it per location, per engine and per month. Alongside it, we record whether each location appears in Google's local 3-pack for the same queries, so search and AI results sit in one report.
How the first 90 days run
The program runs in overlapping phases, with a measured checkpoint on day 45 and an assessment on day 90. Your team spends about two hours on onboarding and two to three hours a month afterwards. A developer needs 6 to 10 hours once during the first six weeks to ship technical fixes.
We plan for listings and schema fixes to show within 3 to 6 weeks and for answer share to move over 3 to 4 months, because third-party mentions build slowly.
What corporate and franchisees receive each month
Corporate gets a network view: answer share by engine, Google 3-pack presence by market, movement since baseline and what changed in each market. Every location gets a one-page summary a franchisee can read without help, showing which engines name the unit, for which queries, whether it appears in the 3-pack, its review position and the work done at that address.

Pricing starts at $1,900 plus $290 per location
Franchise SEO pricing at Citemill is a published formula: a monthly network fee plus a per-location rate that drops at 11 and at 26 locations. Billing is month to month with no lock-in. The Answer Share Audit costs $2,900 plus $150 per location above 10, takes 10 business days and is credited in full to your first month.

What is guaranteed at day 45, and what isn't?
By day 45, at least one engine names at least a third more of your locations than at baseline, or we refund your first month in full and every deliverable stays with you. Queries, engines, cities and the definition of "named" are fixed in writing before we start, so the test cannot be moved after the fact.
We do not promise that a particular AI answer will name your brand, since the same query can return a different answer an hour later. We also do not promise full revenue attribution: most local journeys end in a call or a walk-in that no analytics tool records.
While you are a client, we accept one brand per category per city, so a competing franchise in your category and market will be turned down. All materials belong to you from the moment of payment, whether or not you continue.
Who this fits and how it compares
Citemill fits franchisors and multi-unit franchisee groups with 5 or more locations that can grant access to listings and location pages. It does not fit single-unit franchisees, franchise development marketing aimed at selling new units, or teams that want a guaranteed Google ranking position.
| Criterion | Typical franchise SEO agency | Listings platform | Citemill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Rankings and leads across the network | Distributes accurate location data | Measures and raises how often engines name each location |
| Reporting unit | Network or region | Listing accuracy | Location, engine and query, plus the 3-pack |
| Pricing | Usually after a sales call | Per location, often annual | Published formula, month to month |
| AI answers | Often a slide in the pitch | Increasingly a dashboard score | The core metric, with a refund attached |
Questions franchise marketers ask before signing
How much do franchise SEO services cost?
At Citemill, cost follows unit count: $1,900 a month plus $290 per location on Essential, or $2,900 plus $460 on Complete, with lower rates from 11 and 26 locations. A 50-location system pays $13,500 or $19,900 a month. The Answer Share Audit starts at $2,900 and is credited to month one.
Is SEO still worth paying for now that AI answers local questions?
Yes, and most of the program is SEO work. We fix categories, hours and name, address and phone consistency in every Google Business Profile, build a location page for each unit with LocalBusiness schema, and grow reviews and local citations. Google names relevance, distance and prominence as its local ranking factors, with reviews and links feeding prominence. AI engines read the same signals.
Should corporate or the franchisee own the Google Business Profile?
Both models work if they are written down. Corporate as primary owner with franchisee manager access protects the brand when a unit is sold or closes, because the outgoing operator cannot leave with the login. Franchisee ownership with a corporate manager account reduces friction with operators. Put the choice in the operations manual and add a removal step for transfers.
What happens to franchisee microsites?
We usually recommend consolidating them. A separate domain for one unit creates a second record for the same business and splits reviews, links and signals between two weaker pages. The practical route is to move the local content onto a location page on the brand domain, keep the franchisee's local control there, and redirect the old site.
Does this replace Yext, SOCi or another listings platform?
No. The platform distributes your data to directories and profiles, and we depend on that. We work one layer up: we read what each engine actually says about every location, compare it with what the platform publishes, and fix the gaps at the source. If your listings are already clean, the audit simply finds fewer problems.
How soon can we see a change?
The first measured checkpoint is day 45, and the guarantee is written against it. We plan for listings and schema fixes to show within 3 to 6 weeks and for answer share to move over 3 to 4 months, as reviews and local mentions accumulate. A pilot of 5 to 10 locations against a control group gives the cleanest read.
